Rain

The Red River crested in Pembina at 46 ft this spring. We were glad to have missed major flooding. This week some of our neighbors have not been so fortunate. It has been raining for the past 3-4 days. West of us, the Walhalla, Hoople and Cavalier areas have had more rain than we have. The town of Crystal has had major flooding, water is near the top of the Renwick Dam at Cavalier, and there has been sandbagging in Walhalla as well. This afternoon there is water coming over Highway 55 between Walhalla and Neche. Below is a link to an article in the Grand Forks Herald. So far Pembina has had a little less rain and the Red River is at 36.7 ft. It is projected to rise to 40.9 ft. in the next week.

A Beautiful Sunday

The NWS is now predicting a crest of 47.5 ft next Saturday. There won't be much more to write.

Another Saturday

The Red is at 45.06 ft. The seven day outlook has dropped again to 48.5 ft.

I walked down to the golf course this morning to see if I could help the volunteers who showed up to lay some sandbags. They're hoping to keep the water back behind hole #1 by sandbagging the low spot and hoping to hold it back on the west of #2 by putting up a dirt dike in the lowest area.

I know more people would like to volunteer if they knew help was needed so I'll try to spread the word here if I hear of any work being done.

Friday

The outlook is brighter.  The Red is at 44.7 ft tonight and the seven day outlook was lowered to 49.1 ft. The flood committee met today and decided no action needed to be taken right now. They will meet again on Monday at 4:45.

There has been overland flooding in some rural areas. The water seems to be taking different routes this year and shows up in unusual places. The Pembina River at Neche is still dropping.

Wednesday

Not too much happening today. We saw a little snow in the air this morning. This afternoon we went out to the golf course and helped take the covers off the greens. For those of us who hit to the right on number 5, the ditch it full. The flood committee meeting on Friday has been moved to 4:00.

Waiting....

The Red River at Pembina is at 41.9 ft today and at Neche the Pembina River is 20.64 ft. We thought it would be coming up on Highway 18 at Neche by now but it hasn't. Every flood is different. They have lowered the crest predictions for Fargo and other points south. It is too soon to predict a number for us but the National Weather Service does say it should happen between May 8th and 11th.

There was a meeting of the flood committee this afternoon. About 30 people attended. Kyle Dorion and Ron Monette are the committee chairmen. I guess at this point it's a waiting game. The committee will meet again on Friday.

Today's picture is of the motocross track on the north side of the Pembina dike.

Sunday Morning

A few people closed the flood gate and sandbagged this culvert yesterday. Good thing they didn't wait until today!

Saturday Morning

This morning the river at Pembina is at 32 ft. Most of the ice is gone on the Pembina River but there is still ice in the Red.

A dozen volunteers met at the Pembina Golf Course this morning to move some equipment to higher ground and move golf carts out of So. Pembina. They tired to remove the covers from the greens but it was a little too windy. They'll try again in the next day or two.

Neche

This afternoon students and teachers from North Border Pembina HS spent a couple hours in Neche filling sand bags. The Pembina River at Neche is expected to reach it's highest level the middle of next week. The weather was beautiful here today and the work crew enjoyed being outside.

1 Month Later

Still a lot of snow around. This morning it was 14 degrees outside when I went for a walk. There was no wind so it really was a beautiful morning. I walked across to South Pembina and I could hear the water running over the dam. The ice on the river is beginning to break up.

I also took another picture of the front of our house so you can see how much snow is left.

The National Weather Service upped their predictions earlier this week. The link in the first blog entry will take you to the updated forecast. Now we just wait to see what happens to the south and west of us.

New Blog

Welcome to my blog. I hoped not to have one this year but with all this snow I decided to start one.

Yesterday was the first day of spring. I took a drive around town today and took a few pictures for those of you who don't live around here.

The National Weather Service revised it's spring flood forecast today.  You can see it here. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/fgf/scripts/localdata.php?loc=appahps&data=lpofar.

This picture was taken at the north end of 5th Street facing west.
